the therapeutic bus ride and "up there"

For 6 months now I've been using the Buendia-Binan bus ride as a makeshift bed of sorts; dreamless sleeps to soothe the sore muscles and drown out the endless GMA prime-time mediocrity -- yeah, that's my nightly routine. But today, I just rode the bus from Binan to Makati and back again just for the heck of it, and it brought wonders to my rotting brain.

One of the fruits of this particular ride is Up There, a vague game concept that I know will never ever be made -- blame the current casual trend -- unless I fund this little devil myself.

Up There tells the tale of a young boy in search of his dead mother who, according to his grandpa, lives "up there, beyond the clouds and the sky." He befriended a talking balloon one day, and the two decided to set out and reach the heavens.

The game is a vertical side-scrolling platformer that lets the player control both the boy and the balloon -- but not at the same time. The player can control the boy when he's on the ground and on any solid area, and the balloon when the two characters are in the air. There are also bits of puzzle-solving gameplay in Up There, requiring the player to utilize both characters to beat a puzzle.

As always, I already know how the story will end, but I won't reveal it here. The only thing I can say is that the player can choose how to end the game.

Up There is for Nintendo's WiiWare downloadable service. Release date is Never. Obviously.

Ugh. I've never been this close to the big, ol' bowl since the legendary drink-fest of 2005. Seriously.

And then it's gone

After spending hours on that unexpected gem, the overworked PS2 has finally -- and sadly -- been returned to its clueless owner. Not much has happened during that 30 or so hours, being a level-grinder that I am, but it's safe to say that FFXII is definitely up there in my list of great games. Even though 1) it looks and feels way different from the past installments, 2) and that it's too serious for its own good, 3) the occasional "Congratulations" screens are a bit ridiculous (no matter how nostalgic they are), 4) the story lacks focus in places due to everyone hogging the limelight, 5) and the faux Old English is sometimes annoying, I still think this is the Final Fantasy title to beat. Yes to zero random encounters!

Call me crazy, but because PS1 FFs are divided into 3-4 discs, the games feel a bit more episodic and evenly paced, and this gives players time to reflect on what happened in the past disc. The discs themselves serve as guides -- 4th disc means the game is just hours away from ending, for example -- making the experience "richer." Now that it's on DVD, we lose that unintentional guide, and if the story itself is loose to begin with, it'll add to the players' confusion. But hey, that's just me.

the CD-R King USB gamepad and CTR post

This is officially the 1st CD-R King product that I ever bought, so it deserves a badly touched-up picture. I tend to avoid all things CD-R King due to their, uh, CD-R King quality, but this time, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. For now.

By the way, I only bought this so I could play the one PS1 game that I still enjoy after all these years: Crash Team Racing.

in my very humble opinion

alam niyo, may silver lining pa rin sa lahat ng kaguluhang nangyayari:

mawawala yung mga taong ang gusto lang ay "prestige."

but then again, may "prestige" pa nga ba?

sa panahon ngayon, mag-Coke araw-araw!
